How Elegant Media built the secure ventilation report portal that helped bring 4DMedical their breakthrough XV Technology to hospital physicians, ahead of a critical FDA submission deadline.
Every so often, a project crosses your desk that you know is a little different. Not because of the size of the build, or the size of the budget, but because of what’s actually at stake once it ships. For Elegant Media, the ventilation report portal we developed for 4DMedical (known at the time as 4Dx Limited) was exactly that kind of project.
4DMedical had built something genuinely ground-breaking: XV Technology, a way of turning standard hospital scans into detailed, four-dimensional maps of how air actually moves through a patient’s lungs. It’s the kind of innovation that helps doctors catch respiratory disease earlier, and more precisely, than ever before. Our job was to build the digital front door for that technology — the secure web portal that would let physicians actually see and interact with the results.

By the time 4DMedical came to Elegant Media, they had already proven their science. What they needed was a way to deliver it. Their lung scans generated rich, layered datasets — colour-coded ventilation maps, slice-by-slice CT imagery, and animated breathing sequences — and all of that needed to reach hospital physicians in a format that was fast, secure, and genuinely easy to use.
There was also a hard deadline attached to the project. The portal needed to be ready in time to support 4DMedical’s FDA submission, so there was very little room for delay and even less room for error.
Working closely with 4DMedical’s own software architects and engineering team, our developers focused on a few key goals from the outset:
- Automatically generating a private, unique portal for every single patient scan
- Making complex 4D imaging data easy for physicians to explore, not just view
- Fitting neatly into existing hospital systems, rather than asking hospitals to change how they work
- Meeting the cybersecurity expectations of a regulated medical device
The Solution — A Dynamic Portal for 4DMedical
The result was a web application that watched for new scan data landing on 4DMedical’s servers and, the moment it arrived, automatically built a brand-new, uniquely addressed portal for that patient’s results. No manual setup, no waiting around — just a ready-to-view report as soon as the data was processed.
Each portal gave physicians an interactive way to explore a patient’s lung ventilation from several angles:
- An Executive Summary page, giving physicians the key numbers and visuals at a glance, including tidal volume and ventilation heterogeneity scores
- Axial and Coronal slice viewers, letting physicians click through detailed cross-sections of the lung and zoom in on areas of interest
- A Ventilation Animation page, where physicians could watch the lung “breathe” through the scan sequence, scrub back and forth through the breath cycle, and even compare two views side-by-side
- A built-in guide, so physicians could click on any part of the report and get a plain-English explanation of what they were looking at
- A one-click Print Report function, producing a polished PDF version of the report for hospital records

4DMedical Portal Development Challenges & Solutions
1. Making Complex Medical Data Easy to Understand
CHALLENGE: Four-dimensional lung imaging is a genuinely new way of looking at respiratory health, and the underlying dataset behind a single report was enormous. The challenge was presenting all of that richness without turning the portal into something only an engineer could love.
SOLUTION
We built the portal around a clear hierarchy: a simple summary page first, with deeper detail only ever a click away. Guide panels populated with plain-language explanations sat alongside every visual, and consistent navigation tabs meant physicians could always find their way back to familiar ground.
2. Fitting Into Existing Hospital Systems
CHALLENGE
Hospitals already run on established, tightly controlled systems for handling patient scans and reports. A new tool, however good, was never going to succeed if it asked radiologists and physicians to change the way they worked.
SOLUTION
Rather than building something that sat apart from hospital workflows, we designed the portal’s PDF and delivery pipeline to plug directly into the hospital’s existing imaging and intranet systems. Reports arrived exactly where physicians already expected to find them, with the unique portal link tucked neatly inside.
3. Bringing a Breathing Lung to Life on Screen
CHALLENGE
One of the most valuable parts of 4DMedical’s technology is being able to see ventilation change moment to moment through a breath. Translating that into a smooth, responsive on-screen experience, rather than a static set of images, was a genuinely novel design and engineering problem.
SOLUTION
Our team built a custom animation player that let physicians step through each phase of the breath cycle, pause and scrub through frames, switch between coronal and axial views, and even open a second window to compare two views side-by-side. It turned a dataset into something closer to a story physicians could follow.
4. Meeting the Standards of a Regulated Medical Device
CHALLENGE
As a tool built to support an FDA submission, the portal wasn’t just another web app. Every unique link, every stored file, and every patient record had to be handled with the level of care expected of a medical device.
SOLUTION
We built the portal’s architecture with cybersecurity front of mind from day one, restricting access so that only physicians with a valid link, delivered through the hospital’s own secure channels, could ever reach a patient’s report.

Looking back, what stands out most about this project isn’t any single feature — it’s how much was riding on getting the fundamentals right. 4DMedical needed a portal that could handle genuinely groundbreaking imaging data, present it in a way physicians could trust and understand, and do all of that within the strict expectations of medical device software.
It’s been a genuine pleasure watching 4DMedical grow in the years since. What started as an ambitious Melbourne-based team is now 4DMedical Limited (ASX: 4DX), an FDA-cleared, globally recognised leader in respiratory imaging, with its XV Technology now being explored for major initiatives including a proposed pilot program with the US Department of Veterans Affairs.
